Our Trust
Cambridge University Hospitals (CUH) NHS Foundation Trust comprises Addenbrooke’s Hospital and the Rosie Hospital in Cambridge. With over 9000 staff and over 1100 beds the priorities of the Trust focus on a quality service which is all about people – patients, staff and partners. Recognised as providing ‘outstanding’ care to our patients and rated ‘Good’ overall by the Care Quality Commissioner, is testament to the skill and dedication of the people who work here. CUH’s values – Together- safe, kind, excellent – are at the heart of patient care, defining the way all staff work and behave. The Trust provides accessible high-quality healthcare for the local people of Cambridge, together with specialist services, dealing with rare or complex conditions for a regional, national and international population.

We are looking for a self-motivated and autonomous individual to co-manage the Trust’s Medico-Legal department. With previous experience of working in a legal environment, you will manage a caseload of Clinical Negligence and Employer’s and Public Liability claims liaising closely with clinicians, colleagues, external solicitors firms and insurers. You will have knowledge of the Civil Procedure Rules and will work with the Trust’s insurers and Panel firm of solicitors to make decisions on liability while also considering the commercial and financial impact on the organisation.

You will also be responsible for representing the Trust at a number of Inquests and will be required to travel to and attend hearings on behalf of the organisation. For more contentious matters, you will work with the solicitors instructed by the Trust and the Coroner to ensure all information and witness statements have been compiled and disclosed to the relevant parties. You will maintain the strong working relationship the department has with the Coroner’s Offices locally and nationally and will act upon any recommendations the Coroner makes following the conclusion of an Inquest. You will also be required to liaise with the Trust’s Communications department to ensure press releases are readily available should a hearing be the subject of media interest.

The Medico-Legal department receives a high volume of ad-hoc enquiries from clinicians and other members of staff. You will be able to deal with these as and when they are received providing high quality advice, normally relating to a patient’s treatment at the Trust. You will liaise with the Trust’s Panel firms of solicitors and instruct when external advice is required. This could be for a number of different matters, including cases that need to be referred to the Court of Protection.

You will have line management responsibility for the Medico-Legal Administrator and will provide support to them during the investigation of Losses and Compensation claims.

Interviews are due to take place on 12th March 2018.
